Identify Evinrude Outboard Model and Year
Evinrude outboard motor identification can be determined by locating a metallic embossed tag on the transom bracket with the name "Evinrude" prominently featured, along with the motor's serial number and a variety of other information for your outboard.
If the metal tag is not legible, look for a core plug which is silver. The core plug will have the serial number and the model number on it.
- The first digit; If it's a letter other than "E," it's a model variation built for a boat builder or another country other than the United States. If the letter is a "J" it is a Johnson Outboard
- Next is a group of two or three digits that tells you the horsepower
- The next group of two or three letters identify the trim on
the basic motor. Examples;
- "FRE" for Four-stroke Remote Electric-start or
- "TE" for Tiller, Electric
- Next group is a single letter that appears appended to the trim
code for shaft length.
- Only numbers after the three-letter trim code indicates a short driveshaft, likely 15"
- "L" indicates a 17-inch driveshaft
- "Y" indicates a 19-inch driveshaft
- "X" indicates a 20-inch driveshaft
- "Z" indicates a 22-inch driveshaft
- The next two characters are a simple cipher using letters that
represent a number to identify the year of production
- "I" denotes 1
- "N" equals 2
- "T" stands for 3
- "R" means 4
- "O" stands for 5
- "D" represents 6
- "U" means 7
- "C" stands for 8
- "E" represents 9
- "S" denotes 0
- Example: If the two letter group is "CU," your motor was built in 1987 since "C" stands for 8 and "U" stands for 7.
