Identify Johnson Outboard Model and Year

Your Johnson outboard model number can generally be found on the nameplate located on the mounting bracket or motor. This nameplate contains a serial number and a model number which will identify the year and - depending on the year built - certain details of your specific outboard which will help you obtain the correct parts and service literature.

Because Johnson outboards have been manufactured since 1922, there are differences in the identification tags depending on the year your outboard was made.

The Johnson outboard motor metallic embossed identification tag on the transom bracket will prominently feature the name "Johnson", along with the motor's serial number and a variety of other information for your outboard.

If the metal tag is not legible, look for a core plug which is silver. The core plug will have the serial number and the model number on it.

• The first digit; If it's a letter other than "J," it's a model variation built for a boat builder or another country other than the United States. If the letter is a "E" it is a Evinrude Outboard
• Next is a group of two or three digits that tells you the horsepower
